The well known and traditional Irish Claddagh ring originated from the fishing village of Claddagh which is now part of Galway City (Ireland). The Claddagh’s distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart and usually surrounded by a crown. These elements symbolise love (the heart), loyalty (the crown) and friendship (the hands). 

For hundreds of years, the Claddagh ring was worn as a wedding ring by the small community of the Claddagh in Galway, Ireland. In modern times the Claddagh symbol has become recognised worldwide and is often given as a gift to friends or to loved ones as a sign of Love (the heart), Loyalty (the crown) and Friendship (the hands).

Traditionally if the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward and away from the body, this indicates that the person wearing the ring is not in any serious relationship, their heart is open. When worn on the right hand with the heart facing inward toward the body, this indicates that the person wearing the ring is in a relationship or that someone has captured their heart. A Claddagh ring worn on the left hand and facing inward toward the body indicates that the person wearing the ring is married.
